The County Ground or The Cooper Associates County Ground is a cricket - Stadium in the English town of Taunton . The stadium serves as the home of the Somerset County Cricket Club .

history

Somerset has used the stadium for county championship matches since 1882 and 1891 . The largest crowd was achieved on a tour of the Australian national cricket team in 1948 with 10,000 spectators. Until the 1970s, the playing area was set in a greyhound racetrack . In recent years there have been plans to expand the stadium to enable test cricket in Somerset. In 2012 the club received approval from the English association to develop the stadium on an international level.

Capacity and infrastructure

The stadium currently has a capacity of 8,500 seats. The two ends are called the River End and Old Pavilion End .

In addition to being used in county cricket, international matches have been played here three times. One game was played here at the 1983 Cricket World Cup and two games at the 1999 Cricket World Cup . The stadium has also been home to the England women's national cricket team since 2006 . From the 2017 season , international matches of the English national cricket team will also be played here.
