Font example for Courier

Courier is a font for typewriters and computer . It was designed by Howard Kettler in 1956 and later refined by Adrian Frutiger for the electric typewriters for IBM . As is common with typewriters, it is a non-proportional font , which means that all letters are of the same width. The strong serifs with which, for example, the empty space at the "I" is filled are characteristic.

Although IBM commissioned the design of the original font, the company did not copyright the font; it is therefore license-free.

Courier is often used as a substitute font if the font actually required is not available on the output device.

Courier is also used in most text editors , as it enables a programmer , for example, to better align the source text to be edited (see indentation style ). It is also widely used as the default font for plain text emails.

Variations

IBM Courier

IBM has made Courier freely available in Postscript Type 1 format . This variant is known as IBM Courier or just Courier and is available under the IBM / MIT X Consortium Courier Typefont license.

Courier New

Courier New is a version of Courier for Microsoft - Windows . The font family includes Courier New, Courier New Bold , Courier New Italic, and Courier New Bold Italic . Courier New has a larger line spacing than Courier. Punctuation marks have been revised to make the period and comma more readable.

From version 2.76 the font contains the Hebrew and Arabic characters. The shape of the Arabic glyphs is similar to that in Times New Roman .

Courier New is now version 5.00 and contains more than 3100 glyphs with over 2700 characters per font .

Courier Final Draft

Courier Final Draft is a version with a slightly different spacing of the characters and a bolder typeface than Courier New to simulate typewriter ink. Courier Final Draft is included with popular script software. The font is proportioned in such a way that 55 lines per page can be written without having to pay attention to the formatting. The reason for this is that a DIN A4 page written in this way corresponds to approximately one minute of film.
