List of apple varieties

Cox Pomona is an apple variety of the cultivated apple . Cox Pomona was discovered in the 19th century by the brewer and hobby gardener Richard Cox on his estate in Colnbrook .

The apple is flat. The smooth apple, which shines in autumn, has a yellowish-green basic color, with bright red-orange stripes, spots and larger red-orange areas. The covering color takes up 50 to 100% of the surface. The pulp is soft and the seeds are exceptionally large. In Europe it is ready to be picked from mid-September and ready to eat from October to December. In addition to the bright color, the distinctive ribs on the calyx are also distinctive.

Since Cox Pomona emerged from the same garden around the same time as the better-known variety Cox Orange , it is possible that, like Cox Orange, it is a cross of Ribston Pepping and (possibly) Blenheim Orange . In German-speaking countries, Cox Pomona was only grown sporadically in individual house gardens.

Cox Pomona is edible as a table apple, but is mainly used for cooking because its pulp retains some structure even when cooked. Its taste is mild, sweet and sour and aromatic, it has an overall harmonious effect.
