Craig Raine

Craig Raine (born December 3, 1944 in Shildon , County Durham ) is an English author.

Craig Raine was raised a Roman Catholic . He attended Barnard Castle School, an Anglican public school, and Exeter College, Oxford , where he later taught himself, before becoming editor at Faber and Faber in 1981. His first volume of poetry, The Onion, Memory (1978), portrays everyday objects in an unusual way, a style that Raine managed to enhance in the second volume, A Martian sends a Postcard Home (Oxford 1979).

Raine wrote the libretto for Nigel Osborne's opera The Electrification of the Soviet Union (1986). Raine has been married to Ann Pasternak Slater since 1972 and has two children, Nina (* 1975, now a playwright) and Isaac (* 1979). In 2007 a brief critical biographical study of TS Eliot , TS Eliot: Image, Text and Context , was published.

Craig Raine is the founder and editor of the literary magazine Areté .
