Shildon is a town in the English county of Durham. It is located 3.2 kilometers southeast of Bishop Auckland , 18 km north of Darlington , 21 km from Durham and 37 km each from Sunderland and Newcastle upon Tyne .
The history of the city is closely linked to the construction of the railroad in the 19th century. That is why the National Railway Museum Shildon is located here, which was opened in 2004 by the British Prime Minister Tony Blair . It is a branch of the National Railway Museum in York . Shildon is on the old Stockton and Darlington Railway and has its own station, which is served by National Rail trains.
