Crenella is a mussel genus of the family of mussels ( Mytilidae ); it is the type genus of the subfamily Crenellinae . The genus has been known since the Eocene.

features

The comparatively small cases are egg-shaped to slightly rhomboid in outline. The vertebra sits at the front end or even protrudes beyond the front end. The surface has clear radial ribbing, which together with the clear growth stripes form a grid-like pattern. The ribs split on the edge of the case, the edge of the case is notched. The lock edge is wide and striated across. The ligament is sunk, the foot thickens. The shell is firm.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The genus Crenella is found worldwide.

The species of the genus live buried in the top layer of fine to silty sandy soils from about 4 m to about 600 m water depth. They are not pinned on with linen threads.

Taxonomy and systematics

The taxon was proposed by Thomas Brown in 1827 . Type species by monotype is Crenella elliptica Brown, 1827, a more recent synonym of Crenella decussata ( Montagu , 1808). According to the World Register of Marine Species , twelve recent species are currently (2015) assigned to the genus Crenella . Some fossil species are added.
