The red Pippau ( Crepis rubra ) is a species of the genus Pippau ( Crepis ) in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

Flower heads

Crepis rubra is an annual stem therophyte that reaches heights of 4 to 40 centimeters. The stem has only scale leaves towards the top. The basal leaves are lanceolate, pointed, saw-shaped and serrated.

The flower heads are nodding before flowering. The flowers are pink or white. The shell is 11 to 17 millimeters in size. The bracts are indistinctly arranged in 2 rows. The outer bracts are about half as long as the inner ones, pale or membranous and glabrous or fluffy. The inner ones are pale at their edge and have numerous pale, long and short glandular hairs. The fruits are dark brown in color. The outer fruits are 10 ribs and have short beaks. The inner ones are 15 to 20 ribbed, have a long beak and have small spines.

The flowering period extends from April to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 8, 10 or 12.

Occurrence

Crepis rubra occurs in the northeastern Mediterranean . Its distribution area includes Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, Macedonia, Greece, the Aegean Sea, Crete, Bulgaria and Turkey.

The species grows in fresh to moist fields, on ruderal sites and on fallow land. In Crete it can be found at altitudes from 0 to 800 meters.
