Criolla grande

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Criolla grande is a light red grape variety . It is most widespread in Argentina , where it is the most widely grown grape variety. It occupies 35,000 hectares there.

Criolla grande is a lighter variation of the red Mission grape variety, which in turn is probably identical to País .

It is believed that both Criolla grande as well as Mission and Cereza descended from vines brought to Argentina by the Jesuit Father Cédron in 1557. They are said to have been planted for the first time in the area around Santiago del Estero .

The yield of Criolla grande is large. It is used to produce more or less dark white or rosé wines for the mass market, which are often bottled in tubular containers or large bottles. These wines are often used to blend with strong red wines. Criolla grande is also widely used as a table grape .
