Cristina Fernández Cubas (* 1945 in Arenys de Mar ) is a Spanish writer and journalist. With her stories she has been one of the most outstanding representatives of short stories in Spanish literature since the 1990s.

Biography and literary career

Cristina Fernandez Cubas was born in Arenys de Mar, Spain in 1945 and studied law and journalism in Barcelona . She is married to the writer Carlos Trías Sagnier , and worked as a journalist from a young age. She has lived in Cairo , Lima , Paris and Berlin, among others .

Her first volume of short stories was published in Spain in 1980. So far, five volumes of stories have been published: Mi hermana Elba (My sister Alba) , Los altillos de Brumal (The hills of Brumal) , El ángulo del horror (The horror corner ) , Con Ágata en Estambul (With Agathe in Istanbul) and Parientes pobres del diablo (poor relative of the devil) . The latter volume received the 2006 literary prize for short stories Premio Setenil de Relatos .

She has also written two novels, The Gift Year and the Swing , the play Hermanas de sangre (Blood Sisters) and the autobiographical memoirs Cosas que ya no existen (Things that no longer exist) , which won the 2001 Premio NH Hoteles literary prize for short stories and recently (2011) reprinted in Spain by Editorial Tusquets.

Fernández Cubas uses the fantastic story to confront her main characters, mainly women, with unsettling moods. In her stories she builds up tension and the reader has to take action himself in order to interpret the situations and the silence as well as to recognize the behavior and psychological motives.

Her work has been translated into ten languages. In 2009, the anthology Todos los cuentos (All Stories) appeared with their stories, which has received the Premio Ciudad Barcelona, ​​Salambó and the Premio Qwerty among other awards.
