The Cromwell Gorge is a deep gorge of the Clutha River in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand .

It runs south from the town of Cromwell for 20 km to Alexandra .

Stone fruits used to be grown in the area of the gorge. The gorge was a major attraction in the early days of New Zealand tourism. However, most of the gorge sank in the 1990s as part of the “ think big ” policy in Lake Dunstan , which was dammed behind the Clyde Dam . This led to the discontinuation of the Otago Central Railway behind Clyde and the relocation of State Highway 8 to the east bank of the gorge.
