Crump Island is a small uninhabited island off the Atlantic east coast of the Caribbean island of Antigua .

Location and landscape

Crump Island is located in the northeastern reef zone of Antigua, and is one of the medium-sized of its minor islands . It is north of Seatons between Mercers Creek Bay in the south and Guiana Bay in the north, and in front of the peninsula from Meadows / Coconut Hall, separated by a waterway only 50 meters wide. To the east is Pelican Island in front of Rooms . Administratively it belongs to Saint Peter's Parish .

The island itself measures about 1½ kilometers from west to east, its width varies around a hundred meters. sometimes it is only a few dozen meters wide. In total, the island has an area of about twelve hectares .

The island rises only a few meters above sea level, consists of tropical bush forest and is partly lined with rock and partly with pure white beaches.

History and Conservation

The island was originally called Goat Island ('goat island'), but got its name from the Crump estate , which is now Coconut Hall, in the 18th century .

The island is privately owned and uninhabited. It has been relevant for both tourist development and nature conservation since the 1960s.

A Crump Island Wildlife Reserve ( Nicholson 1977 ) was proposed here in the 1970s . In the 1980s, a local group planned a Crump Island Coral Reef Marine Park  ( n.d. ). It was to include 177 hectares of marine landscape, a marine aquarium and a nature trail. The opening was planned for August 1991.

In the late 1990s, however, the Asia Village Resort was planned here, on the mainland, on Crump Island and Guiana Island , an extensive hotel complex of Malaysian investors. The government withdrew its support for this project after popular protests.

Since 2006 the island has belonged to the North East Marine Management Area ( NEMMA , 78 km²), a rather unspecific protected area. In 2007, an Offshore Islands Important Bird Area  (AG006), which includes the Antiguan minor islands as an important area for coastal birds, was also identified.

On the other hand, a luxury hotel and resort is being discussed by a Chinese investor again in the 2010s.
