The Crutzenkirche ( Latin ecclesia ad crucem , German  Kreuzkirche ) is a former church in the desert of Crutzen in the Frankfurt district of Kalbach-Riedberg .

history

The church was built on a resting place of the funeral procession of Boniface of Mainz to his preferred resting place Fulda . The Crutzenkirche was first mentioned in documents in 1256. The church served as a parish church and burial place for Kalbach, Weißkirchen (Oberursel) and other localities in the area. In the course of the Reformation, the church was given up and fell into disrepair.

In 1983 the Crutzenkirche could be localized through aerial photographs of the then undeveloped area. Stone floor plans were identified. Excavations between 1983 and 1985 uncovered the remains of an older wooden church building from Carolingian times, numerous graves and a silver denarius from the time of Louis the Pious , which suggests that this place was at times a place of pilgrimage.

The construction of the Carolingian and later church was carried out by the Benedictine monastery in Fulda . Some apartments and utility buildings belonged to the church. The complex formed a small daughter monastery of Fulda with a few monks.

The floor plan of the church is now marked by a paving. A few hundred meters from the Crutzenkirche is the Bonifatiusbrunnen , a stopover on the Bonifatius route from Mainz to Fulda.

Based on the historic church, the parish church of Weißkirchen, built in 1962, was named St. Crutzen.
