The Microsoft Cryptography API is the standard programming interface ( English application programming interface , API) on Windows operating systems, on the application programs on cryptographic access methods. It offers programs functions to encrypt and decrypt (English encrypt and decrypt ) data and strong authentication with digital certificates and secure generation of (pseudo) random numbers to. Examples of use are the encryption and decryption of e-mails and data connections as well as logging on to systems with smart cards .

The MS-CryptoAPI was introduced in 1996 with Windows NT 4.0 and continued and expanded up to Windows XP . With Windows Vista , Microsoft 2007 replaces the CryptoAPI of the previous Windows versions with the " Cryptography API: Next Generation (CNG) " for future Windows versions.
