Crystal Castles is an arcade game that was produced by Atari in 1983 . It is controlled with a trackball and is reminiscent of Pac-Man , but has an isometric view. The game was ported to various home computers and the Atari 2600 game console .

Game flow

The player controls a bear named Bentley Bear , and has to pick up gems in a three-dimensional castle by walking over them. A trackball was used for control in the arcade version . When all gems have been collected, you get to the next level. There are some opponents who collect stones themselves and over which you can fly at the push of a button. There are stairs, elevators, tunnels as shortcuts and invisible teleporters . The game consists of ten levels , the first 9 with four locks each, level 10 is only one lock.

opponent

  • Witch Mathilda (the character has to find a hat to kill)
  • walking trees
  • Skeletons
  • Ghosts
  • Balls
  • Bees (when you eat honey)

Meaning and special features

The game was very popular and successful.

  • When Bentley Bear loses a life, different speech bubbles appear depending on the remaining number, like in a comic (BYE, OH-NO or OUCH).
  • The high-score initials appear as a block graphic in the next game.
  • All of the music was classical ( Nutcracker Suite and 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, Mephisto Waltz by Liszt).
  • The game was so successful that conversion kits for other arcade devices were available.
