At 938 m, the Csóványos is the highest mountain in the northern Hungarian mountains of Börzsöny . The Csóványos lies on the border of the two counties Pest and Nógrád .

The Csóványos is part of the Magas Börzsönys ("High Pilsen Mountains") and was formed in the Miocene 18-19 million years ago. It was formed during the phase of highest volcanic activity.
