Ctenobrycon is a genus of omnivorous tetras that are prevalent in South America occurs (Venezuela, French Guiana , Amazon basin to Paraguay River ).

features

The Ctenobrycon species are high-backed, laterally strongly flattened fish and are about 8 to 10 centimeters long. Their mouth is relatively small. The breast region of the fry is covered by comb scales, the sides by round scales. With increasing age, the side scales also transform into comb scales. The sideline is complete and ends in a long channel on the caudal fin. This is unscaled. The dorsal fin is short and scaly, the anal fin long. The caudal fin is forked. An adipose fin is present.

Ctenobrycon species are fish of the middle water layers . They spawn between aquatic plants and lay up to 2000 eggs.

External system

Ctenobrycon is not currently assigned to any subfamily. The genus belongs with four other genera to a monophyletic clade within the true tetras , which is referred to as the Astyanax clade.
