The protected area Cu Lao Cham (Cù lao Chàm) in Vietnam consists of the partially overlapping nature reserve and the marine reserve Cu Lao Cham and includes an archipelago around the main island of Hon Lao (Hòn Lao). The reserve includes coral reefs off the islands , seaweed meadows and a tropical rainforest area with a variety of animal and plant species. The aim is to protect the surrounding marine areas as well ( Cu-Lao-Cham marine nature reserve ).

Emergence

The planning for a nature reserve Cu Lao Cham began in 1986 and ended in 1994 with the official establishment by the Hội An Town People's Committee. The 1544 hectare protected area is divided into a core zone with 800 hectares and a maintenance and development zone with 744 hectares.

In September 2003, the Cu Lao Cham marine reserve was established. Directly adjacent to the nature reserve and partly overlapping it, it has a size of 5175 ha.

Location and geography

The reserve is part of Quảng Nam Province and is about 40 km from Hoi An and 12 km from the mainland. It comprises an archipelago with the main island Hòn Lao (1,317 ha) and seven smaller, uninhabited islands Hòn Khô mẹ (3 ha), Hòn Khô (8 ha), Hòn Lá (72 ha), Hòn Dài (61 ha), Hòn Mồ (11 ha), Hòn Tai (34 ha) and Hòn Ông (38 ha). At 517 m and 316 m, the highest peaks in the area are on Hòn Lao.

fauna and Flora

The lowland rainforest that dominates the archipelago covers an area of 532 ha and is still largely unexplored. The protected area is also important as a home and retreat for water birds and white-nest salangans .

The coral reefs off the islands with a total size of 165 hectares and the 500 hectares of seaweed meadows are home to 135 different types of coral, 202 types of fish, 84 types of mollusks and 4 types of the lobster-like family .

Population and tourism

About 2800 people live in the protected area on the main island with the fishing village Tan Hiep. Most of them earn their living by fishing and agriculture, but also more and more by providing services and handicrafts due to the expansion of tourism.

Problems

Increasing pollution, increasing tourism, clearing the rainforest and collecting swallow nests are just a few of the problems the protected area has to deal with.
