Cube Life: Iceland Survival (short mostly CL: IS or Cube Life called) is an indie sandbox - video game , which of Cypronia developed and for the first time in June 2015 for Nintendo's then current game console Wii U as a download in the Nintendo eShop has been released. The game was later ported to iOS , Android , MacOS and Windows , the last two versions with higher-resolution graphics (HD version). The player controls a shipwrecked man who has to survive in an island world. The game appeared in the wake of the success of Minecraft , with which it is often compared due to the game principle and its block graphics.

Gameplay

The game has three game modes: Survival Mode , Creative Mode and Multiplayer Mode .

In so-called survival mode , you play a male person named Barry who is stranded on a desert island after a shipwreck. Now it is up to the player to maintain Barry's health and to explore the game world, which consists of several islands, in order to eventually meet the various bosses, such as B. a giant spider to kill. At night cannibals appear whose aim is to kill the player. Experience is gained for almost every action in the game (running, fighting, adding and removing blocks, etc.). If you have gained enough experience, your player level increases by 1. The game also contains an Internet ranking list on which the players with the highest levels are listed.

In contrast to Minecraft , the game world is not generated randomly, but rather given by the developers; each player starts on the same island . The game world is four times larger than Minecraft: Wii U Edition .

In Creative Mode the player can create his own maps and since version 1.2 also share them with other players.

In multiplayer mode , two players can compete against each other in different modes and create maps together in creative mode.

Development and publication

After publication

The game was released in North America on June 4, 2015 , in Europe on June 25, 2015, and in Japan on February 3, 2016 . The game has been corrected for errors in several updates, but expanded with additional functions and game items or creatures. In version 1.1 the local multiplayer mode with the game modes Deathmatch , Tower Defense and Co-op as well as new areas and bosses have been added. Version 1.2 made it possible to share maps from Creative Mode with other players and also added new areas and bosses. With version 1.3 a skin editor and a sorting according to friends in the internet ranking list was added.

HD remake / mobile version

Cypronia announced on December 24, 2016 at 11:00 am on its website a HD remake of Cube Life: Iceland Survival with sharper textures and reworked HUD to that for the PlayStation Store of PlayStation 4 , the online distribution platform Steam and Nintendo eShop the Nintendo Switch should appear. The PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions have not yet been released despite the announcement for the fourth quarter of 2018. Minecraft had been ported to many platforms in the course of its success (as of 2015), with the exception of the Nintendo consoles. Several developers tried to fill this gap. According to the developer, Cube Life: Island Survival was the first Minecraft -like game that was published for the Wii U, even before titles such as B. Stone Shire , Terraria and Discovery . The game briefly reached number 1 in the Europe charts, number 2 in the US charts and number 3 in the Japan charts of the Nintendo eShop .

The game received consistently medium to good ratings from various game magazines. The long loading times of 47 seconds (from version 1.1 only 37.5 seconds) were criticized most frequently. Nintendolife, for example, gave it 7 out of 10 points and gave it the rating "Good". Gaming Boulevard rated the game with 8 out of 10 points and described it as "[...] the closest thing to Minecraft on a Nintendo platform".
