As Cubitalarthrose degenerative changes (to osteoarthritis ) in the elbow joint ( Latin articulatio cubiti called).

causes

In contrast to joints such as B. the knee joint ( Latin Articulatio genus ), which is exposed to constant stress from the body weight, cases of osteoarthritis in the elbow joint rarely occur naturally; Cubital arthrosis can also be found in patients who are exposed to high physical stress on the elbow joint at work (e.g. construction workers), a more likely cause is trauma (broken bone with joint damage). Elbow joint arthrosis can occur in one or more partial joints of the elbow.

Symptoms

The main symptom of osteoarthritis is the occurrence of pain, which occurs in the early and not yet very advanced phase, especially after sleep. (Heavy) stress can also trigger pain; in advanced stages, it can also occur in a state of rest. A further feature of a degenerative joint can represent a restriction of movement in one or more directions possible for the joint (e.g. extension , flexion and rotation or pronation and supination ). Audible and palpable crepitations (crackling or cracking noises) in the joint or swelling are also possible.

treatment

  • The elbow joint can be treated with the help of physiotherapy in such a way that the muscles are specifically trained to stabilize the joint. Cartilage-building drugs, which are administered in some places, have no proven effect, such as the frequently administered chondroitin . Apparent improvements through dummy drugs (see placebo effect ) cannot be ruled out.
  • A treatment method used on particularly damaged joints, u. a. The (operative) joint stiffening ( arthrodesis ) can also be carried out on the elbow joint . This treatment, which is usually irreversible, enables a fairly promising elimination of pain and is mainly useful when the affected joint is severely impaired in its function. Cartilage and other tissue are removed from the joint so that the adjacent bones can grow together directly. The bones are fixed in a favorable position using screws or metal plates and are removed again after they have grown together. In any case, the arthrodesis results in a restriction of movement that is no longer possible at the site of the original arthritic joint. In addition to risks such as unfavorable healing of the bone ends, weakening of the bones and / or muscles due to the restriction of movement and the common surgical risks, it cannot be ruled out that the so-called Sudeck syndrome ( complex regional pain syndrome ) occurs, in which the bone is severely degraded and painful inflammation results.
  • An abrasion arthroplasty can remove worn cartilage.
  • Another surgical option for treating a dysfunctional joint is the insertion of a prosthesis .
