Culcreuch Castle

Culcreuch Castle is a late medieval Scottish castle near the village of Fintry on Loch Lomond . It had been the residence of the Barons von Culcreuch since 1699 and was converted into a hotel in the 1980s.

history

Culcreuch Castle was built by Maurice Galbraith in 1296. The castle was the seat of the Galbraith clan from 1320 to 1624 , when it was sold to cousin Alexander Seton of Gargunnock to pay a financial debt. In 1632 it was bought by Robert Napier, a younger son of John Napier, 8th Laird of Merchiston . The Napier clan held the estate for five generations. The castle was used to house Oliver Cromwell's troops in 1654 . In 1796 the castle was sold to Alexander Spiers from Glasgow , who built a cotton mill and distillery in Fintry. In 1890 it was sold to JC Dunwaters, then in 1901 to Walter Menzies. It was passed into the hands of Hercules Robinson, the last of the Menzies line, in the 1970s. In 1984 it was sold to Arthur Haslam, who converted the castle into a hotel. In 2007, ownership was transferred to an investment company in Los Angeles , the property is now managed by Robert Reynolds.

layout

Culcreuch is a rectangular tower house , with three floors and an attic, covered by a parapet and slate roof. The north and east extensions to the actual tower were added by the Napiers in 1721 and fit in with the original tower.
