Cullen Old Church
The Cullen Old Church , also Cullen Old Kirk , formerly Cullen Parish Church and St Mary's Collegiate Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish village of Cullen in the Council Area Moray . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
The earliest mention of today's Cullen Old Church dates back to the year 1236. Fragments of this building are probably still integrated into the current structure, which has been revised several times. The bones of Elizabeth de Burgh , wife of the Scottish King Robert the Bruce , were initially buried here after her death at Cullen Castle . To pray for the soul of his wife, Robert the Bruce established a chaplaincy .
The St Anne's Aisle (south aisle) was supplemented by John Duff in 1536 . Seven years later, the church was promoted to collegiate colleges as St Mary's Collegiate Church , one of 38 in Scotland at the time. In 1602, when the later Earls of Seafield gave up Findlater Castle as their seat and established Cullen House , the church received its imposing patron s box .
In the construction phase of the late 18th century, the church building received its current structure. The north aisle was built and galleries were installed in the interior. For the development of the property Cullen House, James Ogilvy, 5th Earl of Findlater, 2nd Earl of Seafield had Cullen rebuilt several hundred meters northeast as a planned settlement from 1811 . The old settlement, in the center of which the church was located, was demolished with the exception of the church. The church is still in regular use today.

The Cullen Old Church is about 500 meters southwest of Cullen near the mansion Cullen House. The masonry of the Kreuzkirche consists of quarry stone with natural stone surrounds. The entrance doors are kept very simple. A round arch portal has meanwhile been closed with masonry. Various lancet windows , some of which are coupled, and ogive tracery are embedded along the façade , such as the window on the south aisle built in 1536, which is coupled to form a quadruple. The final gable roofs are covered with slate from Banffshire . On the west gable sits a small roof turret with an open bell. It dates from the 18th century.
