Culross Tolbooth

The Culross Tolbooth is the former Tolbooth of the Scottish village of Culross in the Council Area Fife . In 1972 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

In 1490 Culross was made a Burgh of Barony and finally installed as a Royal Burgh in 1588 . At that time a Tolbooth was built in Culross, but its location cannot be reconstructed. It was replaced by the current building in 1626. In 1783 the bell tower was added. A renovation was carried out in the late 1950s. It served as the town hall until 1975, when it became obsolete as a result of administrative reorganization. Today the former Tolbooth houses the community center.

description

The Culross Tolbooth stands in the historic center and overlooks the Firth of Forth . The main facade of the two-story building with a mansard floor, which is exposed to the southwest, is five axes wide. The brickwork made of sandstone blocks is plastered with Harl along the rear facade . External stairs running along the facade lead to the entrance portal on the first floor. It closes with a fighter window . Above it is a lantern with a crown, the glasses of which show the Culross coat of arms. Flanking are 24-part lattice windows , while smaller, 9-part windows can be found on the ground floor. A bell tower with a clock tower rises above the portal, the openings of which are all arched . Above the frieze and cornice there is a slate-covered curved hood with a weather vane . Two simple doors on the ground floor lead into the interior. Above the left, the inscription Anno Domini 1626 shows the year of construction. The steep gable roof is covered with slate and closes with simple stepped gables .
