Frans van Dusseldorp (also Franciscus Dusseldorp or Franciscus Dusseldorpius ; * October 23, 1567 in Leiden ; † March 31, 1630 in Cologne ) was a lawyer and Roman Catholic clergyman .

Life

Dusseldorp lost his father at an early age, but was encouraged by his mother. In 1572 he moved to Antwerp with his mother and returned to his hometown shortly after the liberation of Leiden. Nothing more is known about the early training. In 1586 he went to the University of Douai , where he received the licentiate in law on October 23, 1589 . In 1590 he settled as a lawyer in The Hague , but also became active in Leiden. It is documented there in 1595. In 1597 he moved to Utrecht because there was a large Catholic community there. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he devoted himself to studying theology there .

Dusseldorp was in contact with Vicar Apostolic Sasbout Vosmeer as a lawyer. After Dusseldorp's mother died on September 9, 1606, his interest in becoming a priest grew. The ordination finally took place on November 26th, 1609 by Vosmeer. Two years later he was appointed canon in Utrecht. He continued his theological studies and became a preacher valued by the clergy .

Dusseldorp fled to Emmerich am Rhein in 1614 for fear of persecution , but did not feel safe there either and left this city on June 24, 1614. He saw his freedom to preach in danger. On June 29, 1614 he reached Cologne. There he wanted to serve his church as a preacher. He stayed in Cologne until the end of his life.

Works

Dusseldorp is said to have written numerous writings, some of which are known but not preserved. For example, the following works were printed after his death:

  • Tractatus de matrimonio non ineundo cum his qui extra ecclesiam sunt , Antwerp 1636 ( digitized version ).
  • Anales Belgici , edited by Robert Jacob Fruin in Works Hist. Gene. , Third Series, Volume 1.

A well-known handwriting is also:

  • Isagoge Francisci Dusseldorpii de origine tumultuorum Belgicorum , quoted by Hugo Franciscus van Heussen in Oudheden Bisdom van Utrecht I , p. 73.
