Culsalmond Old Parish Church

The Culsalmond Old Parish Church is a former parish church in the scattered Scottish settlement of Kirkton of Culsalmond in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1971 its ruins were included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1988. The associated morgue is classified separately as a Category C monument.

history

The earliest mention of a church on the site is from 1178 when the land was passed to the monks of Lindores Abbey . Today's Culsalmond Old Parish Church was built as Andrew's Church in 1789. The roof turret, built in 1680, was integrated here. In 1867, what is now the Culsalmond Parish Church nearby was built. The Andreaskirche was given up in 1938 in favor of this church. Today it is only preserved as a ruin. Older records mention a recumbent stone circle consisting of twelve stones in the surrounding cemetery, which could not be confirmed in recent on-site visits.

description

The church building is off the A920 on the northern edge of the scattered settlement. The masonry of the elongated hall church is made of quarry stone . Recycled stone material from a previous structure was identified on various occasions; including the reddish sandstone surrounds of the building openings. The outer facades were once plastered with Harl . A total of six arched windows are installed, four of which are lined up along the south facade. The older ridge turret, who once carried the bells, sits on the west gable. The final gable roof has not been preserved.

The unused morgue is on the northeast side of the surrounding cemetery. The 1.5-storey building with a vaulted cellar has a square floor plan. It was built during the 19th century. Its facades are plastered in Harl. The building closes with a slate-covered pyramid roof .
