Curt Dietz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Curt Dietz (* 1882 in Schmalkalden ; † 1965 in Lafayette (California) ) was a German-American entrepreneur who promoted geological research in Germany.

Dietz was the son of a factory owner in Schmalkalden and after graduating from high school and doing a business apprenticeship, he worked as a translator in Belgium, France and Spain. In 1904 he went to Cripple Creek (Colorado) , where he worked in mining. He experienced the earthquake in San Francisco and founded a successful import company for wood and later coffee, for which he frequently visited South America. In 1938 he gave up his entrepreneurial activity and devoted himself to his childhood love, geology. He studied geology at several universities, graduating from Stanford University in 1948, where he was Associate in Geology by courtesy . During this time he attended many geological institutes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and promoted them.

In 1958 he was awarded the Gustav Steinmann Medal “in recognition of his unselfish, generous support of young German scholars immediately after the Second World War”.

It should not be confused with the geologist Kurt Dietz, who is sometimes also written as Curt Dietz and who was at the Lower Saxony State Office for Soil Research.
