Cusumano

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cusumano is a Sicilian wine producer which, with over 450 hectares, is one of the largest on the island. Most wines are marketed with the IGT quality level. The winery has several production facilities that cover all of Sicily's varietals. In addition, some crus are bottled.

history

The winery was founded in 2000 by the brothers Diego and Alberto Cusumano in the province of Palermo . The headquarters are in Partinico . When they were founded, they started out from the so-called "Sicilian wine archeology ", which is an auxiliary science of archeometry . Questions of the cultural-historical connections between archaeological, art-historical and monument preservation aspects are examined.

According to various tasters, the new Alta Mora winery in Castiglione di Sicilia just north of Mount Etna gave an important boost to development.

Production facilities

San Giacomo

This location near Butera is 140 hectares in size and is the southernmost of all cultivation areas, which leads to a significantly earlier ripening. Nero d'Avola , which ideally reflect the terroir, grow on the stratigraphic transition zones of the Trubi, white limestone-marl-sand structure . In addition to wine, the producer also cultivates and markets almonds and olives. The vineyards are located at about 350 meters and are divided into 50 microzones. The cru produced here is called Sàgano .

Ficuzza

The vineyards are located near Piana degli Albanesi south of Palermo on Lake Scanzano . At 700 meters above sea level, 70 percent white and 30 percent red varieties grow on consistently loamy soil. Lush bush and woodland all around testify to a fertile plateau. Three recognized crus are cultivated here.

Presti e Pegni

In Monreale and Alcamo , at 250 meters above sea level, there are two further vineyards, together 70 hectares in size, which mainly grow on clay soil. Noà is the cru that is grown here.

The production areas have continued to grow in recent years. In total there are around 100 hectares of vineyards that belong to the winery. The most important grape varieties are Nero d'Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon , Syrah and Merlot as well as Chardonnay , Inzolia and Alcamo.

rating

Johnson rates the winery with two to three stars, finds it "completely satisfactory" and inexpensive. Due to the high production volume, he speaks of "amazing quality". Of the thirty quality wineries listed in the Johnson, only two are larger than Cusumano.
