Parts of the body at risk

Particularly at risk are areas with tight skin tension on the surface and little meat under the skin. The majority of cuts occur in the eye area, mostly on the eyebrows, less often in the nose area. In amateur boxing matches and in the youth classes, the athletes wear head protection . In addition to the top of the head, this protects the forehead area, the eye sockets and the cheekbone area; this reduces the risk of getting a cut.

The cutman

In the corner of every professional boxing athlete, a so-called “cutman” stands ready next to the trainer and a helper or physiotherapist during the fight . He only takes care of the care of cuts, swellings and nosebleeds . Should the wound continue to bleed or enlarge during the course of the fight, the referee is required to stop the fight. The ring doctor can also demand this decision from the referee. Cutmen are also used in other full-contact sports such as B. Kickboxing in action.

Care and healing

A cutman has various options for closing the cut or stopping the bleeding: Cooling takes place using an ice pack or a specially shaped, chilled iron with a handle (called " Enswell "); cleaning with a water-soaked sponge and cotton swabs . A greasy cream prevents the cut from bursting any further. In the past, only Vaseline was used for this , but now a cooling ointment enriched with adrenaline is also used in a prescribed mixing ratio. After the fight, the wound - depending on its size - is covered with an ointment bandage, stapled or sutured.
