Cyclostomata (or Tubuliporata ) is the only recent order of the class Stenolaemata of the bryozoa (Bryozoa or Ectoprocta). They appeared for the first time in the Ordovician and, with around 175 genera , were particularlywidespreadin the Cretaceous period .
The name comes from their structure, which is not box-shaped like the cheilostomata , but tubular with a round opening for the tentacle wreath. Individual zooids can communicate with each other through pores in the tube wall.
Some types
Crisia eburnea is a species distributed worldwide with up to 3 cm large, shrub-shaped ivory-colored colonies. The species mostly occurs at depths of up to 300 m, but can also be found in brackish water or estuaries.
Other genres are Crisella , Tubulipora and occurring in the North Sea Lichenopora . The latter two species form plate-shaped colonies, while the colonies of Crisella are more tree-shaped.
