Cydia amplana , as Kastanienwickler known is a butterfly from the family of Winder (Tortricidae).

features

The butterflies reach a wingspan of 13-20 mm. The forewings have larger pink or rust-colored areas. A dark spot on the outer rear edge of the forewings is distinctive for the moths.

The last stage of the caterpillar of Cydia amplana can be distinguished from that of the late chestnut moth ( Cydia splendana ), which remains whitish, due to its pink color .

distribution

Cydia amplana is widespread in Europe. To the east, the occurrence of the species extends to Asia Minor and the Caucasus . Cydia amplana was first observed in the British Isles in 1990. Since then, in some years in August, depending on the weather and wind conditions, there has been an influx of butterflies of the species.

Way of life

The adult butterflies usually fly from early July to late August / early September. The main flight time is August. The moths fly mainly at dusk and are attracted by light traps.

The caterpillars develop in the fruits of various deciduous trees, including hazel ( Corylus ), walnut ( Juglans ), sweet chestnut ( Castanea ), beech ( Fagus ) and oak ( Quercus ). To do this, they mainly drill into fallen fruit lying on the ground and eat the pulp. The hatched caterpillars usually drill into the fruit in September and leave them again at the end of October. The caterpillars pupate in the ground and overwinter as a pupa.

In a study on Cydia amplana and Cydia splendana it was found that the predominant damaging effect on acorns was caused by Cydia splendana . In some countries, Cydia amplana is considered a pest for sweet chestnuts.
