Cygnet

Cygnet is a place in Tasmania that is 35 miles from Hobart . Cygnet had 929 inhabitants at the time of the last Australian census in 2016. It was discovered by Joseph Bruny d'Entrecasteaux in 1793 when he was sailing along the Huon River and named the bay after the numerous swans (Cygnes).

history

Cygnet was already mentioned in the Comte de Fleurieu's travelogue about the exploration of the d'Entrecasteaux Channel. The first European settler William Nichols reached this area in 1834 and applied for land allocation on the east side of the bay. Part of his house can still be visited today, as it has been preserved. In 1840 this place was called Cygnet and it became the center of the British convicts of the then convict colony Australia with the convict probation station built there . The number of the population developed from 1840, but the place was depopulated in 1848 when the convict station was abandoned. Free settlers came around 1850 and a school was built. In 1862 the place was named Lovett and renamed back to Cygnet in 1915. By the 1930s, Cygnet became a region where fruits such as apples, peaches, gooseberries, strawberries and raspberries are successfully planted in plantations.

present

Cygnet has a backpacker hotel, banks, gas stations and three pubs. Today the harbor is also used for tourist purposes. About a mile south of Cygnet is a sheltered anchorage for sailboats, just north of Robleys Point, about a 15-minute walk into town.
