Cynthia Folio

Cynthia Folio (born December 24, 1954 in Fort Belvoir , Virginia ) is an American composer, flautist and music teacher.

The daughter of a member of the US Army lived in her childhood a. a. three years in Germany and three years in Panama, where she took flute lessons with Eduardo Charpentier and studied solfège at the Panama Conservatory . She then studied music theory and flute at the Eastman School of Music until 1985 and music theory and composition with Joseph Schwantner , Robert Morris and Larry Nelson and flute with Bonita Boyd and Emily Swartley Newbold until 1989 at West Chester University .

She received a Distinguished Alumni Award from West Chester University. a. the National Endowment for the Humanities Award and the ASCAP Standard Award eleven times in a row , was composer in residence at the Yaddo artist colony and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and won the New Music Delaware Competition in 1994 and 1999 and the National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition .

In addition to her work as a composer, Folio has published music theory articles in various magazines and has performed as a flautist with ensembles such as the Network for New Music , the Hildegard Chamber Players , the groups Latin Fiesta and David's Harp , the Silver and Wood Trio and the Temple Faculty New Music Trio (with Jeffrey Solow and Charles Abramovic ). She taught flute at Texas Christian University from 1980 to 1990 and has since been Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Temple University .
