Cyphomyrus is a genus of African freshwater fish from the family of Nilhechte (Mormyridae). The genus is widespread in tropical Africa.
features
Cyphomyrus species have a slightly high-backed, laterally flattened body and are 19 to 31 cm long. In front of the dorsal fin, its profile is convex or a distinct hump is formed. The approach of the dorsal fin is always clearly in front of that of the anal fin. The dorsal fin is always longer than the anal fin and it has more fin rays. The base of the anal fins is longer than half the base of the dorsal fin. The base of the pelvic fin is closer to the base of the pectoral fins than to the beginning of the anal fin. The mouth is under, the chin distended. In both jaws only the middle ( symphysis ) is dentate, the middle pair of teeth of the lower jaw is not significantly enlarged. The gill openings are short and do not reach below the base of the pectoral fin. Cyphomyrus species have 50 vertebrae or less. Like all Nilhechte, Cyphomyrus species are capable of electrical communication and electrical orientation .
