Cyriel van den Abeele

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cyriel van den Abeele (also: Cyrille van den Abeele ; born January 14, 1875 in Ursel , † November 2, 1946 in Gent ) was a Belgian organist and composer . He was known for his improvisation skills on the organ.

Life

Cyriel van den Abeele received his first music lessons from his father, the organist Hyppoliet van den Abeele. He attended high school in Eeklo . From 1883 he studied organ with Jozef Tilborghs (1830–1910) and his assistant Adolphe D'Hulst (1851–1916), theoretical harmony with Paul Lebrun (1863–1920), practical harmony and figured bass with Frans Van Avermaete at the Conservatory in Ghent and composition with Adolphe Samuel . In 1885 he won first prizes in these subjects. In 1886 he also won a first prize for a fugue. In 1887 he graduated in organ with the rarely granted diplôme de capacité .

In 1899 he took part in the Prix de Rome with Ernest Brengier with the cantata Bruiloftsklokken ("Wedding Bells ") without success . He published the first songs in Heyndrickx's student song book that same year. In 1901 Cyriel succeeded Désiré Van Reysschoot as organist at St. Sint-Niklaaskerk in Ghent . He was highly valued for his improvisational skills, and the Sunday services in Sint-Niklaas were an attraction for music lovers in Ghent and the surrounding area. In 1902 it was perceived as a minor scandal in Ghent that the French-speaking director of the Conservatory, Emile Mathieu, appointed the French-speaking organist Léandre Vilain to the vacant organ professorship and not the Flemish van den Abeele, who was much appreciated in Ghent. This disregard was also discussed in the local press. Among other things, his Catholic nationalism was cited as a reason for his resignation. To make ends meet financially, he and his wife opened a grocery store and traveled the country as a sales representative. But he still had private music students and eventually got a job as a music teacher at the Josephite School in Melle . During this time he stopped composing. Lambrecht Lambrechts published a biography of Cyriel van den Abeeles in 1926. Here he asks him to compose again and to pass on his improvisational art in an improvisation course. In fact, he began composing again in the 1920s. Shortly before his death in 1946, he gave another improvisational concert for the officers of the Liberation Army.

Cyriel van den Abeele's creative years were between 1895 and the year of his marriage in 1904, and again from the 1920s. He wrote piano and chamber music as well as some works for orchestra. His church music - cantatas, motets and masses - were published as music supplements in the music magazine Musica sacra . An Andante con espressione and a Scherzando fantasia were published for organ . The style of his church music is classical, that of his chamber and orchestral music is based on Richard Wagner. His family donated a large part of his compositions to the library of the Conservatory in Antwerp.
