Cyril Hillyard Coaffee (born February 14, 1897 in Edmonton , Greater London , according to other sources Winnipeg , † July 2, 1945 in Winnipeg) was a Canadian athlete.

life and career

Originally from Great Britain , Coaffee emigrated to Canada in 1905. He began his track and field career in 1915 at the North End Amateur Athletic Club . Five years later he won the Canadian qualification for the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp over 100 meters in a time of 11.2 seconds. For the Olympic team in his country, however, he was initially not considered for budget reasons, only a fundraising campaign by the citizens of Winnipeg enabled him to participate.

In Antwerp, Coaffee started over 100 meters and over 200 meters. In both disciplines he was third in his run, which did not qualify for advancement. In 1922 he set the world record over 100 yards at the Canadian Championships, held by Charlie Paddock , in a time of 9.6 seconds. At the same event, he also won the 220 yard race. In October 1922 he set in a time of 1: 30.0 min together with Laurie Armstrong , Billy Miller and Peavey Heffelfinger a new Canadian record in the 4 x 220 yard relay race.

In 1924 he was the captain of the Canadian delegation at the Olympic Games in Paris . In his individual runs over 100 meters and 200 meters, he reached the semi-finals here as well as with the Canadian 4 x 100 meter relay, but he was denied an Olympic final in all three disciplines. In 1926 and 1927, as in 1922, he managed to win the Canadian Championships over 100 and 220 yards. He beat, among other things, the later double Olympic champion Percy Williams .

In the Canadian eliminations for the Olympic Games in 1928, he suffered from tendon irritation in both legs and missed the qualification. Not taking part in the Amsterdam Games meant the end of Coaffe's sporting career. Coaffee died of a heart attack at the age of 48.

Running style

Coaffee suffered from partial paralysis in one of his arms. As a result, he always ran with a strong template, so that the impression was created that his legs were shooting out from under him.
