Systematics

The species, first described by Carl von Linné in 1753 after a description by Alexander Garden , was temporarily divided into up to eleven individual species, all of which were rejected by JLThomas in 1960; the genus has since been understood as monotypical. Together with the genus Cliftonia , Cyrilla forms the family of the Cyrillaceae. Since Cliftonia is also monotypical, the family only includes two species.
