Dächsel , in the 16./17. Century also Dexel , is a family name .

Origin and meaning

The name comes from an old Saxon or Upper Lusatian pastor's family , whose direct lineage with Christopherus Dexel (1561–1610), Notarius publicus ("public scribe") in Freiberg , and his son Gottfried Dexel (1593–1661), pastor in Dorfchemnitz in the district of Central Saxony (1617–1630), begins. Gottfried's grandson Johann Dächsel (1676–1729), pastor in Frankenthal in the Bautzen district , was married to Johanna Lessing (1690–1770), an aunt of the poet , in his second marriage Gotthold Ephraim Lessing ; Joan's father and the poet's grandfather were brothers. The writer Karl May is also a descendant of Gottfried Dexel.
