Heinrich Theobald Dächsel (born March 9, 1855 in Hohenbocka , Hoyerswerda district , Lower Silesia ; † July 31, 1940 in Militsch , Lower Silesia) was a Protestant theologian , Bible translator, pastor prim. and superintendent .

family

He came from an old Oberlausitz pastor's family and was the son of the Protestant theologian and pastor August Dächsel (1818–1901) and Friederike Vincentz (1821–1903). The Dächsel family was related to the family of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) and was related to the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729–1781) through common ancestors .

Dächsel married Else Schröter , the daughter of a military doctor. There were five children from this marriage.

His uncle is the royal Prussian counselor Bernhard Dächsel .

Life

Dächsel studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Halle and Breslau and after his ordination on October 1, 1879 was first parish vicar in Freystadt, then for six years pastor in Arnsdorf in the district of Strehlen .

In the years 1886–1925 he was pastor prim. at the Gnadenkirche in Militsch (Lower Silesia). There he worked 1894–1925 at the same time as superintendent of the Diocese of Militsch-Trachenberg and was a member of the Silesian Provincial Synod . Later, as a member of the Prussian General Synod, he was also elected as a member of the Spruchkollegium für Lehrsachen. On April 1, 1925, he retired and spent the rest of his life in Militsch.

Dächsel had a great deal of theological and historical knowledge as well as a great gift for speaking: “ You had to listen, regardless of whether you agreed or rejected his statements. He was feared as a debater. "

Act

After the publication of his pamphlet " Meaning of Holy Communion for the development and expansion of the church's community life " one was against him disciplinary proceedings initiated with the aim of compulsory retirement, but he managed to ward and with an " encouraging recognition " by the Church Council ended .

Through his initiative and his commitment he achieved the construction of five new churches, the establishment of seven new parish offices or parish vicariates , the establishment of a parish in Wildbahn , district of Militsch, and the creation of several preaching places.

Dächsel is still known today for his main work “ Paulus ”, which he dealt with for 40 years, and the translation of the New Testament from 1928 . In his work he pursued the aim of correcting the previous interpretation, which was under the pernicious influence of Jerome's Vulgate , by explaining the terms from the proven technical use of the words and thus discovering a completely new, surprising meaning. But his somewhat idiosyncratic scholarship was unable to achieve a lasting effect.

For the publication of his translation of the Greek " The Writings of the New Testament ", on which he had worked for 30 years, he did not find a publisher for a long time, until finally the Adalbert - Deaconess Mother House in Kraschnitz (Kr. Militsch) dared the risk of publication. This was the redemption of a debt of thanks from the mother house, since Dächsel had " saved the house from destruction " in 1901 .

  1. The date of death of August 2, 1939 given in sources (e.g. Neue Deutsche Biographie ) is clearly incorrect. In a private family archive there is a letter from Theobald (undated, but written on May 10/11, 1940), the content of which relates to the invasion of the German troops into the Netherlands and Belgium on May 10, 1940 and the confirmation of a great-nephew on March 3, 1940. A newspaper report on the occasion of his 80th birthday bears the subsequent note of the date of death of July 31, 1940.
