The Dîner en blanc ( German  food in White ) is a form of social Dinings and refers to the based on private initiative, through social networks organized and widespread mass picnic white-robed men in prominent urban locations.

General

The starting point of the phenomenon was Paris . There are now similar events around the world on all continents. In Germany, the first Dîner en blanc took place in Hanover in 2008 , and since then it has also increasingly been held in other cities in German-speaking countries. Dîner en blanc is organized as a flash mob .

history

The summer of 1988 is said to have been the origin of the event, when a certain Francois Pasquier is said to have spontaneously relocated his overcrowded private garden party to the nearby Bois de Boulogne .

As a result, they agreed to meet every June for a picnic that was not registered by the police at a public but secret location in Paris until the end. Completely white clothing from head to toe is mandatory for all participants. Tables and chairs that you have brought with you are put together to form long tables, all participants bring a three-course cold menu and drinks (preferably champagne). The locations included the Place de la Concorde , the terrace of the Palais de Chaillot and the inner courtyard of the Louvre , and for the 20th anniversary of the event, the avenues of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées . According to the organizer, around 8,000 participants gathered at Place de la Concorde and its surroundings on June 6, 2019.

The Diner Blanc has long been considered an exclusive upper-class event with no commercial or political background. However, the character of the event has changed in the meantime and attracts people from all walks of life. The offshoots in Germany are characterized by the fact that they explicitly encourage everyone to take part. The number of participants is now in the thousands. In June 2012, 2000 participants from different social milieus gathered in Berlin.

distribution

The idea has recently also spread in the German-speaking area.

The diner has existed in Hanover since 2008, usually in constantly changing locations that are kept secret until the end. The participants usually organize themselves decentrally via social networks, since events of this size can usually not be carried out without conditions (toilets, fees, garbage collection, etc.).

On May 29, 2010 the first Dîner En Blanc Berlin took place at Bebelplatz with around 400 participants and on July 1, 2010 almost 500 guests all dressed in white met in the Munich Hofgarten . In 2011 almost 1000 people met for the 'Dîner en Blanc' in Berlin at Gendarmenmarkt and around 800 in Munich on Wittelsbacherplatz .

In 2010, a similar event took place on Schopstrasse in Hamburg for the first time: the so-called White Dinner , which was attended by around 900 guests. The following year, the White Dinner was held on August 13th on Osterstrasse. Over 2,000 people took part. However, it is an organized event in Hamburg, for which z. B. streets are blocked in advance, which does not correspond to the basic idea.

The idea of a worldwide distribution has since been taken up by the founder's son, Aymeric Pasquier, in Montreal. This will try to build a network in which all cities work together. The original Diner en Blanc is without any commerciality. Event organizers, sparkling wine manufacturers and other companies are now offering professional events with admission fees and catering in some places. This form is rejected by the founders of the Diner en Blanc. Aymeric Pasquier has, however, registered a figurative mark with the number 1108447 as a European Community trademark with the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market for commercial use.
