Dowel collection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dübensammlung is a collection of approx. 2300 musical works by over 300 named composers as well as some unknown composers. In total, the collection contains over 30,000 handwritten pages and around 50 printed works and is today one of the most important original sources for musical works of the 17th century by well-known composers such as Dieterich Buxtehude and Heinrich Schütz .

history

The collection was put together between 1640 and 1720 by the Swedish court conductor Gustav Düben and his son and later handed over to the Uppsala University Library . Here it was initially forgotten in an attic until it was rediscovered by Carl Stiehl in 1888 . In 1988 the musicologist from Uppsala University Erik Kjellberg started an initiative together with Kerala J. Snyder to digitize the works, which should also be made available to the public via the Internet. In September 2006, the database was presented to the public as part of a musicological symposium in the Gustavianum Museum and a concert. The works contained therein have been cataloged since 1986 and can be researched in libris and via the local DISA database.

content

The Dübensammlung contains a large number of vocal works , mainly from the music scene around the Baltic Sea , but also from the Italian, French and English music worlds. A large proportion of these are works by the Lübeck composer Dieterich Buxtehude . It also contains French opera music and works by composers such as Vincenzo Albrici , Giacomo Carissimi , Henri Dumont and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer . In addition, the Dübensammlung is an important source for instrumental music of the 17th century, alongside the Ludwig score book , the Kromeriz collection and the Rost Codex compiled by Franz Rost.
