The dune Stahlberg II is a natural monument on the northern edge of the Darmstadt district .
geomorphology
As an inland dune, the Stahlberg II dune is the remainder of a drifting sand dune. The dune was formed at the end of the Vistula Ice Age in the cold tundra climate through sand drifts from Pleistocene drifting sand .
flora
The dune is largely covered with oak and pine forest, on the west side there is a xerothermal steppe lawn with numerous sub-Mediterranean species, some of which are considered endangered:
Natural monument
The dune has been a natural monument since 1954. The protection ground is the preservation of the dune and the characteristic xerothermal biocenoses located there . There are numerous plant species on the area that are protected, worth protecting or endangered. The natural monument Dune Stahlberg I is only a short distance away.

etymology
The name Stahlberg is probably from the mnd. The word stal / staal has been derived, which means something like the "place of rest".
Another theory is based on the Latin word stabulum , which means something like "location".
A note in the Arheilger church bill from 1566 describes the Stahlberg as a “ central court ”.
