Waskom is a city in Harrison County in the state of Texas in the United States .
Waskom is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region , which includes parts of the four states of Arkansas , Louisiana , Oklahoma, and Texas.
geography
Waskom is located in the northeast of the state of Texas in the southern United States. It is in the midst of a lake landscape that stretches from northeast Oklahoma to east Texas. It is located about midway between the four large lakes Martin Lake , Lake O'the Pines , Caddo Lake and Cross Lake .
Nearby locations include Greenwood (3 km southeast), Shreveport (10 km east), Scottsville (13 km northwest), and Marshall (15 km northwest).
history
Waskom was established in 1871 as a stopover for traders en route from Shreveport to Dallas . In 1872 a train station was built. In 1884 about 150 people lived in Waskom. There were two churches, a school, a sawmill and four flour mills.
In 1924 oil was discovered near the city, which quickly increased the population to around 1000. In 1933, 1117 people lived here, there were 37 local shops or businesses. The population fell to 564 by 1946, but rose again after the discovery of new gas reserves. Waskom was profiting from its location near the Louisiana border at the time, as oil and gas prices were higher there.

Interstate 20 runs south of the city and runs from west Texas through six states to South Carolina . US Highway 80 also runs centrally through the community .
Demographics
The 2000 census showed a population of 2068, divided between 790 households and 571 families. The population density was 289.3 people. 75.1% of the population were white, 15.8% black, 0.6% Indians and 0.2% Asian. 7.2% were of a different ethnicity , 1.3% had two or more races, and 9.9% were Hispanic or Latin American of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were 99 men. The median age was 35 and the per capita income was 13,080 US dollars, which was 24.2% of the population below the poverty line.
At the 2010 census , the population rose to 2,160.
