Scottsville is a city in Harrison County in the state of Texas in the United States .

Scottsville is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region , which includes parts of the four states of Arkansas , Louisiana , Oklahoma, and Texas.

geography

Scottsville is located in northeast Texas in the southern United States, about 14 kilometers west of the Louisiana border. It is in the midst of a lake landscape that stretches from northeast Oklahoma to east Texas. It is located about midway between the three great lakes Wright Patman Lake , Lake O'the Pines and Lake Bob Sandlin .

Nearby cities include Marshall (2 km west), Karnack (12 km northeast), Waskom (13 km southeast), and Jefferson (28 km north).

history

The area was first settled in 1840. Shortly afterwards, the first cotton plantations emerged on large areas of land. The plantation of the city founder William Thomas Scott was said to be of a size similar to that of the politician Jefferson Davis , and it was also said that he was the largest slave owner in Harrison County.

In 1869 the community received a post office. In 1929 about 300 people lived here. During the Great Depression , the number temporarily fell below 50.

traffic

US Highway 80 runs directly south of Scottsville and runs from Texas to Georgia on the US Atlantic coast. There is a connection to US Highway 59 in nearby Marshall , and Interstate 20 runs two kilometers south of the community .

Demographics

The 2000 census showed a population of 263, divided between 91 households and 66 families. The population density was 77.5 people per square kilometer. 54.8% of the population were black and 43% white. 0.38% were of a different ethnicity , 1.9% had two or more races, and 1.5% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were 77.7 men. The median age was 33 and the per capita income was 16,225 US dollars, which was 21% of the population below the poverty line.

At the 2010 census , the population rose to 376.
