D'Artagnan and the three Musketeers ( Japanese ワ ン ワ ン 三 銃 士 , Wanwan Sanjūshi , Eng . "The Three Wauwau Musketeers") is a Japanese animated series from 1981. The series with 26 episodes is based on the book The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas , all characters are anthropomorphic animals, mostly dogs.

In 1990/91 the series was continued with a further 26 episodes as a Spanish-British co-production under the title One for all and all for one - D'Artagnan's return .

In the 17th century, the young D'Artagnan wanted to become a good fencer in order to join the musketeers of the French king . Soon he befriends the musketeers Aramis, Athos and Portos. He also meets Juliet, the queen's maid, with whom he soon falls in love.

Production and publication

The series was produced by Nippon Animation in 1981 and directed by Hidetaka Saito , Shigeo Koshi and Taku Sugiyama . Akira Nakahara wrote the script and the character design was done by Shuichi Seki . The artistic director was Kazue Itō.

It first aired on October 9, 1981 on MBS in Japan and on TVE in Spain. The German version was shown for the first time from January 5, 1986 to April 6, 1986 (episodes 1-13) and from December 19, 1987 to January 1, 1988 (episodes 14-26) on Sat.1 . There are also translations into French, English, Polish, Italian and Tagalog as well as an Afrikaans version .

In 2004 a German DVD was released under the title Dogtanian and the Three Musketeers .

The music for the series was composed by Katsuhisa Hattori . For the Japanese opening credits the song Wanwan Sanjūshi ( ワ ン ワ ン 三 銃 士 ) was used, for the credits So yō Onushi wa? ( そ う い う お 主 は? ), Both sung by Maron Kusaka.
