The class V 45 - from 1968 called class 245 - comes from a procurement of the railways of the Saarland (EdS), to which 10 diesel locomotives were delivered from France in 1956 ; it essentially corresponds to the series Y 9100 (later 51100) of the SNCF .

In 1957, the 10 locomotives came to the German Federal Railroad when the Saarland was connected to the young Federal Republic . They were intended for the easy shifting service and were mainly used in repair shops. On December 20, 1980, the 245 004, the last locomotive of the 245 series, was retired.

history

In the mid-1950s, the Saarland railways, which were then under independent management, needed new and powerful locomotives for the shunting service. The order for ten machines went to the French-Alsatian company Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques ( SACM ) in Grafenstaden ; the delivery took place in 1956.

The locomotives involved were two-axle locomotives with an end driver's cab, equipped with 400 HP diesel engines from Saurer , type SBD, coupled with a hydraulic fluid transmission from Voith . The two axles were driven by the transmission via chains. With the incorporation of Saarland in 1957, the ten locomotives with unchanged locomotive numbers came to the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Initially, they continued to be used as shunting locomotives in Saarbrücken until they were replaced by the more powerful locomotives of the DB class V 60 in the early 1960s .

The V 45 001 and 002 then served as spare parts donors, the remaining eight machines were redesignated as the 245 series in 1968 and used in shunting services - mainly in DB repair shops - in Cologne-Nippes , Darmstadt and Hagen-Eckesey , among others . The only exception was the V 45 005, which took over all traffic on the Falls – Gefrees railway line ( Bayreuth depot ) for several years; The lack of train heating was not an obstacle for passenger train clothing even in winter, because the DB used the last blunderbusses (with a coal stove) on this route .

Preserved locomotives

Between 1973 and 1980 the locomotives of the class V 45 were retired, the last machine, 245 004, was used in the AW Paderborn. The 245 004 and 006 were sold to an Italian company, where they were in use until 1987/1988. The 245 009 is exhibited in the German Steam Locomotive Museum (DDM) Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg.
