Association for the promotion of a German research network
The Association for the Promotion of a German Research Network e. V. (DFN-Verein) is a self-governing organization that aims to create scientific and technical prerequisites in Germany for the establishment of a computer-aided information and communication system for research on the basis of public transmission networks.
history
The association was founded in 1984 by universities, non-university research institutions and research-related commercial enterprises with administrative and financial start-up support from the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT). The statutory organs of the association are the general assembly, the administrative board and the executive board.
The chairman of the board is Hans-Joachim Bungartz from the Technical University of Munich . Vice-presidents are Rainer Bockholt from the University Computing Center of the University of Bonn and Ulrike Gutheil , Chancellor of the Technical University of Berlin . Numerous universities and public research institutions are members of the DFN Association.
After its establishment, the association initially supported its members in the procurement of hardware (generally X.25 sub-switching) for connection to the DATEX-P network of the Deutsche Bundespost. At the same time the possibility was created to reach the EARN and thus the BITNET via this network . At the same time, efforts were started to give preference to products in all network activities that strictly adhered to the OSI reference model . For example, only X.400 compatible software should be used for e-mail in the area of German scientific institutions . With the ever increasing importance of the Internet and the TCP / IP protocol family, these efforts came to an end.
Science networks
From 1989/90 the DFN began to operate its own networks. All networks provided by the DFN-Verein have or always have the abbreviation WiN as a name or part of the name. The first own network WiN was based on the X.25 protocol and was designed as a sub-network of the DATEX-P network of the Deutsche Bundespost. The connected scientific institutions thus had the opportunity to operate higher quality connections (up to 2 Mbit / s) at a reasonable cost.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the WiN was expanded to include the GDR and the new federal states . This he panded WiN was called ERWIN .
After that, new WiNs with more modern technology and a correspondingly increased bandwidth were set up about every five years. In detail, these were in chronological order

International cooperation
Since the DFN-Verein acts as an internet service provider for its members , the respective scientific network is an integral part of the internet . However, there are strong connections to the research networks of the partner organizations abroad, especially within the framework of GÉANT and GÉANT2. The DFN is the German partner of the international Eduroam network .
