Many vertebrate genes containing Homeobox have been identified on the basis of the similarity of their sequence to the developmental genes of Drosophila . Members of the Dlx gene family contain a homeobox that is related to the "distal-less" (Dll), a gene that is expressed in the head and limbs of a developing fruit fly. The “Distal-less” gene family (Dlx) comprises at least six different members, DLX1 - DLX6 . The DLX proteins have a role in the forebrain and in the development of the facial skull. Three transcription variants for this gene have already been shown, but the full length of one of these variants has not. Studies of the two splice variants showed that one of the encoded isoforms acts as a repressor of the β-globin gene, while the other isoform lacks this function.
