history

Donic was founded in 1978 in Cologne by Georg Nicklas, a doctor of physics who also played successfully in the table tennis Bundesliga from 1973 to 1981 . The company's name is an acronym made up of letters from the title and name of the founder: Doktor (DO) Nicklas (NIC).

When Georg Nicklas wanted to move to Sweden in the early 1980s, he sold the company to the Schreiner family in 1984. Karlheinz Schreiner, himself a professional player and trainer, had founded the table tennis supplier Sport Schreiner in Völklingen twenty years earlier . A few years later he brought Donic from Cologne to Völklingen. Both companies have existed side by side since then.

In 1993 Frank Schreiner, the son of Karlheinz Schreiner, took over the management and signed the Olympic champion in table tennis, Jan-Ove Waldner , as brand ambassador . In 1994 the two world champions Mikael Appelgren and Jörgen Persson were also hired as Donic brand ambassadors. The Swedish trio won several world and European championships.

After the German school championships in 2000, Frank Schreiner signed the then twelve-year-old Dimitrij Ovtcharov for Donic. Ovtcharov is now a German national player and was No. 1 in the world rankings in January 2018. Ovtcharov ended the contract on January 1st, 2020 and switched to Tamasu Butterfly .

In 2016, a high-rise pallet warehouse was completed on the expanded company premises next to the headquarters.
