The DSC Wanne-Eickel (officially: German sports club Wanne-Eickel Handball eV ) is a handball club from the Herne district Wanne-Eickel . The first men's team played in the Bundesliga for a year . Today the team competes in the district league.

history

DSC Wanne-Eickel was founded on October 5th, 1969 by the building contractor Robert Heitkamp . Within nine years, the team rose from the district league to the then second-class Regionalliga West . There the DSC was runner-up behind TUSEM Essen in the 1978/79 season . A year later, the club was one of the founding members of the 2nd Bundesliga . There the DSC was one of the top teams and came third in the northern group in 1982, 1983 and 1985.

In 1989, the team was four points ahead of LTV Wuppertal champions of the 2nd Bundesliga North and rose to the Bundesliga. However, the jump into the German elite league was too big. After the end of the preliminary round, coach Siegbert Busch's team took last place, which was not left in the following round of relegation. The highlight of the season was the 19:18 win in the first round of the DHB Cup against the reigning German champions TUSEM Essen. After a second round win against Bayer Dormagen , the DSC was eliminated in the round of 16 in a seven-meter throw against TuS Schutterwald .

For financial reasons, the club decided not to start in the 2nd Bundesliga and continued in the regional league. There the team became champions of the north season in the 1992/93 season, but failed in the promotion round at TSG Altenhagen-Heepen from Bielefeld . Two years later, financial problems and differences with the main club led to the cancellation of the first team from the regional league. In the 1995/96 season, the DSC did not provide a senior team.

This was followed by a restart in the 2nd district class, from which one promptly rose. Further promotions in 1999 and 2001 led the club to the district league. In the meantime, the handball department founded its own club. The background was the black money scandal in the football department . In 2005, the club was on the verge of promotion to the state league, but missed the leap in class because PSV Recklinghausen was one goal better in a direct comparison. After relegation, the first team plays in the Kreisliga Industrie .
