DTS Digital Images (renamed Lowry Digital Images in January 2005 ) is an independent subsidiary of DTS Inc. specializing in film restoration. The company was founded by John Lowry in 1998 and has since been involved in more than 100 film restorations for television, DVD, 35mm film and IMAX . With the restoration of well-known film classics, including Casablanca , Bambi , The Godfather , THX 1138 , Formicula , Pinocchio and Star Wars, the company is one of the world market leaders in its business area.

Digital restoration

DTS Digital Images digitally restores their films. Specially patented software is used here, which restores around 90 percent of the end result fully automatically. The rest of the effort is due to the fine dirt particles that could not be removed by the software. These are manually retouched film frame by film frame.

The restoration process begins with a high-resolution 10-bit RGB scan of the original negatives. For this purpose, DTS Digital Images has over 600 Macintosh dual-processor G5 computers, which are equipped with over 2400 gigabytes of RAM and 478 terabytes of hard drive capacity. The computer algorithms for the automatic removal of hundreds of dirt particles in a scene are based on the respective previous image. This removes scratches and debris that span fewer film frames. The software automatically retouches the dirt away using a similar film image. The software does not recognize large nicks and cracks on the negative and must be processed manually. The color coordination of the film material takes place in cooperation with the respective film studio. After each restoration, DTS Digital Images produces a high-resolution master that can be used for future film releases.
