Daim Zainuddin

Daim Zainuddin (born April 29, 1938 in Alor Setar , Kedah , Malaysia ) is a Malaysian politician.

Life

Zainuddin studied law in London in 1959 , and urban planning some twenty years later at the University of California at Berkeley . After studying in London, he worked in the public sector for a while, becoming a private entrepreneur in the late 1960s .

Zainuddin was a long-time friend of Mahathir Mohamad , who comes from the same place as him. In 1982 he entered parliament when Mahathir led the UMNO and the Barisan Nasional in general elections. He became Minister of Finance and had to organize the Bumiputera Bank crisis . He also led Malaysia through the severe recession in the 1980s to an extraordinary boom in the early 1990s.

He resigned in 1991, but is still considered one of the most influential men in Malaysia. He has a credit balance of more than 6 billion euros.
